Handtying is an ancient Celtic tradition that dates back thousands of years. It was originally used to symbolise a betrothal. The engagement would last a year and one day and at the end of that term the couple would decide to marry or go their seperate ways.
The hands, or wrists are tied together using ribbons or cords which is where the expression “tying the knot” comes from. Some couples choose to use lace or another fabric which has special meaning to them. Their hands are bound by the fabric and once the Handtying has been completed the couple can then keep the knotted fabric as a symbol from their wedding ceremony.
The unity sand ceremony is another variation of the Unity candle ceremony. The couple each pour a coloured sand from a small vessel into one larger vessel. As the grains of sand mix together it symbolises the intertwining of both people into one family through marriage.
This is a particularly lovely enhancement to include in your ceremony for blended families or couples who want to include their children. The vessel full of sand makes for a beautiful keepsake to keep in your home.
The Unity candle ceremony symbolises the joining together of two individuals coming seperately into the joining together of their marriage. Three candles are used, one larger pillar candle joined by individual dinner candles on either side.
It is also popular as a way of including parents - for the mothers or fathers of the couple to light their individual candles and then the couple themselves will each take those individual candles and light the main candle together. The beauty of the 2 flames together symbolises the couple joining together.
This is also known as the blessing of the rings. At the beginning of the ceremony your wedding’s rings are passed around with your guests and “warmed” with their love, wishes and blessings for the couple throughout their marriage.
The rings are returned back around to the best man in time for the exchanging of them and they contain the wishes and blessings from everyone that you love.
Wine, champagne, Prosecco or your favourite drink of choice can be used for this ritual in which you both write eachother a letter to open on your first wedding anniversary. During the ceremony the bottle and letter are enclosed in a wooden box, personalised if you wish.
You are celebrating your love for one another on the wedding day and then again on your anniversary in the future when you can open the box, exchange letters and have a drink together to celebrate the occasion.
During this ritual you will have chosen your tree or plant of choice beforehand. During the ceremony we take the tree from its pot and move it into a new pot also adding 2 cups of soil - one from each member of the couple which can be taken from a special place to you both or from your childhood homes.
You will each add your own soil and some water and re-plant the tree together. You then have it to bring to your together home to plant there and forever have as a symbol of your wedding day forever more.
